Effective Ways to Deal with an Unpredictable Schedule

An unpredictable schedule is a chaotic one. And, it can confuse and/or frustrate anyone who experiences such uncertainty. After all, it’s better to know what’s coming and have a heads-up, in order to be prepared. But, that’s not always the case and it can wreak havoc psychologically and emotionally. Eventually, an unpredictable schedule can lead to total burnout. So, read on to learn some of the best ways to cope and take control of an otherwise unpredictable schedule.

Chaos is Counterproductive

Some entrepreneurs claim they really like uncertainty and the surprises associated with “going with the flow.” At least, they may say this to others, but when it comes down to it, aren’t very keen on unpredictable schedules. They’d much rather have their days planned out in order to maximize their productivity and budget their time wisely. These things can’t really be accomplished when schedules fluctuate too much. It’s just not feasible to effectively plan and execute when every little thing is completely on-the-fly.
Workers at the top and bottom of the economic spectrum feel the loss of control dearly, and technology is often the culprit. Whether it’s a buzzing smartphone or software that tracks our whereabouts, the more hard to predict our schedules become, the less real flexibility many of us have. —Harvard Business Review
Although this may work in a micro sense, like during the course of an ordinary day that’s gone a bit awry, or during free time, such as vacation, a truly unpredictable schedule is tumultuous. And this breeds confusion, anxiety, as well as a sense of being out of control. Those simply aren’t good emotions to experience while running a business, so it’s necessary to make adjustments in order to produce a more predictable schedule.

Effective Ways to Deal with an Unpredictable Schedule

The business owners who succeed not only have a vision, but an actionable plan to follow. Of course, it’s not possible to plan out every scenario. But, it is advantageous to take as much control as you can. Fortunately, there are effective strategies for dealing with an unpredictable schedule:
  • Structure your non-work day. The very first thing you need to do is begin structuring your non-work time. While this might seem strange, it helps you to build a healthy habit and there’s no better place to start than your non-working days, which are often free-for-all situations. If you can put even a loose schedule to your non-working days, you can most certainly do that in the office or out on the road.
  • Establish work-related boundaries. One of the most difficult things for any entrepreneur to do is establish boundaries between their free time and their work time. Business owners, by their very nature, are concerned about their companies well-being and take every opportunity to ensure that it’s running properly. But, this all too frequently leaves to work intruding into free time, which can severely detract from personal relationships, particularly when it comes to spouses and children. So, set boundaries for your work and personal times in order to maintain a healthy balance.
  • Allow for work flexibility and continuity. If your schedule changes quite substantially from day to day, that’s okay too. Instead of scheduling and entire day from one appointment or task to another, set aside blocks of time and prioritize accordingly. This way, you’ll be able to accomplish what you most need to, when you are able, instead of trying to pound a square peg into a round hole.
  • Reward yourself when you accomplish goals. As always, it’s a good idea to reward yourself when you accomplish a goal, be it big or small. Part of the process can be redefining or redesigning your schedule to be more predictable and therefore, allow you to be more productive.

Steps to Starting a Successful Side Business

There’s nothing wrong with supplementing your income, or, to start on a journey to pursue a dream. A side business is an avenue for both, but, like most full-time employees, you’re wondering just how to get started. It might surprise you, but it’s not just about the logistics. While the nuts-and-bolts are certainly vital, you’ll also have to deal with other things. In other words, it’s not just about carving out the time, being able to deliver on your promises, but also, finding personal fulfillment. Too many people start side businesses, burn the candle from both ends, and wind-up burning out. What you do need to understand is that, especially early on, the right mindset is key to future success. You’ll probably start out on fire, ready to tackle whatever comes your way. Inevitably, there will be problems, whether big obstacles or temporary setbacks. If you keep in a positive frame of mind and learn from mistakes, you’ll go much further. You’ll also need a workable game plan that rewards each achievement step you reach. Steps to Starting a Successful Side Business First, you must consider a few things, such as: is this a needed service or product? Can I deliver on a tight schedule? What competition will I face? Is there room for scaling-up? Of course, the biggest question will be can the time invested turn a profit and if not immediately, when will it realistically do so? People’s initial motivation is often money – they want to save more, pay off debt or simply afford a better lifestyle for themselves and their families. But then, it often morphs into something deeper, as people realize that their side businesses allow for a creative expression and satisfaction that can be hard to find in their full-time jobs. —Entrepreneur.com Next, understand and accept that you’ll have two demanding jobs. That’s going to bring some stress, it’s just unavoidable, and, it will also zap your energy. The trick is to set your sights on your goals and be convinced they are within reach, it’s okay if it takes time to realize. Don’t make the mistake of rushing because you’ll likely sabotage yourself and be willing to give it a solid test run, knowing that it might not work out. If you’re willing to make the commitment, get past the planning and taking action, you can make it work. Getting down to the nitty-gritty, the following steps are what you’ll need to do in order to start a successful side business: Reframe your way of thinking. Don’t let your day job be an obstacle, instead, think about all the positive things it provides. First, it does put a constraint on you, but that’s a good thing because it spurs creativity. In addition, look at your full time position as a funding source and a place to sharpen your skills. Determine workable, key actions. You’ll need a written list of workable, key actions — things that will move your idea forward, but don’t just keep ruminating. Every step should move you in the right direction with purpose. Restructure your schedule. This probably sounds too obvious, but too many people who try to start a side business, fall prey into thinking their schedules are already set. Dedicate routine times to work your side gig and be willing to make adjustments as necessary. Network whenever you can. If circumstances allow it, you can network at your full-time position, letting co-workers know what you’re offering. If not, there are plenty of other venues: your child’s school, your church, your gym, places you volunteer and visit often. Entrepreneurs are one of America’s greatest assets! It’s Said Style without Substance is Bad, But Is the Opposite Actually Better or Even Worse?

It’s Said Style without Substance is Bad, But Is the Opposite Actually Better or Even Worse? We’ve all heard “beware of style over substance.” It’s a common expression that means a person may appear to have all the answers but in reality, there is very little or nothing behind his or her facade. Likewise, it also describes someone who puts greater value on appearance than depth of knowledge or skill. In either case, it fools others into thinking an individual possesses something special when in fact, they aren’t extraordinary after all. This distinction is particularly important when it comes to choosing a business partner, a vendor, or even a client. So, entrepreneurs need to be aware and alert of the telltale signs and more critically, what the downsides of each personality are. Sure, it seems obvious that all style and no substance is bad. However, it’s equally vital to understand that the opposite can be harmful, too. The Dangers of Style Over Substance A person who is all style and no substance may have all the necessary skills. But when the moment of truth arrives, he or she is lost. However, that’s a broad generalization of a greater specific. So, let’s take a look at some of the particular reasons why a businessperson with all style and no substance can be problematic: Lack of follow-through. They might make grand promises or claims but fail to deliver on them due to a lack of underlying strategy or execution skills. Superficial relationships. They may prioritize networking and appearances over building genuine connections, leading to fleeting and ultimately unproductive partnerships. Misalignment with company values. A style-over-substance leader may struggle to foster a culture of substance and results if a business’s success depends on innovation or problem-solving. Short-term thinking. They might focus on quick wins and flashy projects rather than building a sustainable and long-term strategy for the business. Potential for ethical lapses. Without a strong foundation of integrity and competence, such individuals might resort to unethical tactics to maintain appearances. It’s important to note that style and charisma can be valuable assets in business. However, without substance to back them up, they can be detrimental to long-term success. Downsides of a Substantively-Focused Business Partner with No Personality or Style Now, we’ll get into the opposite scenario. Although people are familiar with the shortcomings of style over substance, what are the downsides of an individual who has very little or no charisma? While substance is undoubtedly crucial in business, a complete lack of personality or style can also present big challenges, such as the following: Limited networking and relationship building. Someone with little personality might need to work on building rapport with clients, partners, or employees. Effective business relationships often involve personal connection. Lack of creativity and innovation. A purely analytical approach can sometimes hinder creative problem-solving and out-of-the-box thinking. Difficulty adapting to change. A rigid, no-nonsense approach might make it challenging to adapt to changing market conditions or unexpected challenges. Poor communication. A lack of personality can sometimes manifest in poor communication skills, leading to misunderstandings and inefficiencies. Uninspiring leadership. If the person takes on a leadership role, their lack of charisma could demotivate employees and hinder team morale. Limited market appeal. In customer-facing roles or industries focused on branding, a personality-devoid individual might struggle to connect with the target audience. Again, it’s important to note that a balance between substance and style is often ideal. A strong foundation of knowledge and skills combined with effective communication and interpersonal abilities can create a highly successful business partnership. Want to Accomplish More?
