Accomplish Your Biggest Goals in Small Steps

You’ve probably heard the way to eat an elephant is to take one bite at a time. In business this is fundamental because it decidedly identifies the road to success. This road, it should be well understood, isn’t an easy path and will have plenty of bumps along the way. These setbacks, or failures, are excellent parts of the learning curve and are typically more valuable than successes. Savvy entrepreneurs embrace this truth and use it in a strategic way.

Some of the largest and oldest companies were born from simple ideas. These giants grew from obscurity, not because of all they offer, but because each accomplished a goal which made them instrumental to the world of commerce. In 1939, after many frustrating years, inventor Charles Goodyear discovered the process of vulcanization. Though the legendary achievement is etched in history, the backstory is quite telling. Goodyear spent years trying to turn his concept into reality. He went dead broke and into extreme debt, yet endured and persisted on one single goal.

How to Accomplish Your Biggest Goals in Small Steps

Of course not every entrepreneur suffers such extreme adversity. It’s true that the majority of businesses do experience fits and starts but overcome and go on to achieve enough to turn a respectable profit. The way this happens is through a series of phases which include periodic cycles of failures. These aren’t due to lack of motivation, not being smart or talented enough, but the result of trying to accomplish too many things at once.

When people set out to begin a major work project or adopt a healthier lifestyle, it’s easy to become discouraged when picturing the long road ahead. By the same token, even smaller-scale plans like keeping a medical appointment or a standing date to the gym can become easily derailed by the busyness of our daily lives or a simple aversion to the doctor or the treadmill. —The Wharton School

Let’s get back to how to eat an elephant. The key to tackling any big goal is to do so in a smart and workable manner. Though most people understand reaching a goal takes time, their enthusiasm causes over-reach and that’s when things start to go wrong. You just can’t do six things at once and expect to master all of them. Too many directions, which is to say too many projects, is a recipe for failure. So, the key to success is the opposite — do one thing at a time. Here’s how to accomplish your biggest goal in small steps:

  • Set a big goal to reach. The first step is to set a realistic goal. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big but these can be too large to reach before feeling discouraged. One of the reasons entrepreneurs achieve success is they have a vision that’s focused and workable.
  • Identify a realistic path to take. Another component to achieving your big goal is to map out a realistic path to take. Break the process down into phases —these don’t have to include every possible detail or include all contingencies. Martin Luther King remarked on this when he said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
  • Start with one small, incremental step. You’ve probably heard different adages about the first step being the hardest. It’s true and to feel a sense of accomplishment while building momentum, the first step ought to be small.
  • Take a moment to reflect the accomplishment. After each incremental step or phase is complete, take time to reflect on your accomplishment. The sense of pride is inspiring, and it reinforces your self confidence.

With every step and phase completion, you can look toward your ultimate goal but stay focused on the here and now. This will help to motivate you and it’s a great way to appreciate your hard work.

Ways Business Owners can Deal with Personal Crisis

Entrepreneurs, by their very nature, are self-reliant. They set goals and achieve them with confidence. When a personal crisis strikes a business owner, it can be very damaging to their corporate environment and even its micro-culture. Suddenly, the dynamics change and can lead to irreparable harm. We’ve all heard the advice not to bring personal problems into professional space, but, some are so large they have a nearly uncontrollable effect. It’s best to bring the situation into perspective, but, doing so might be difficult to accomplish. Ways Business Owners can Deal with Personal Crisis In some instances, it’s possible to prepare a business for a crisis. When it’s impending and inevitable, business owners should prepare by speaking with their team members about delegating and assigning responsibilities, seek legal advice (if applicable), and focus on what’s most important. There will be difficulty in maintaining balance but by being proactive, you’ll have less to worry about. Eventually it happens to the best of us. Something occurs in our personal lives that is so devastating, we have difficulty concentrating at work. It may be the death of a loved one, a divorce, a financial crisis, or serious damage to our homes. When our personal lives are in chaos, it can be hard to focus and get what we need to do done. —Inc.com Unfortunately, it’s often the case that a personal crisis strikes without warning. When it does occur, it can be very burdensome to get through. Even the toughest entrepreneurs will have difficulty trying to deal with upset in their personal lives while continuing to run their businesses. Here are some ways business owners can deal with a personal crisis: Outsource and be willing to ask for assistance. It’s okay to let go and farm-out work during turbulent times, especially if you’re having trouble staying focused and concentrating. Also, there’s no shame asking for assistance from your team — it’s actually a smarter choice. Be upfront with customers. As soon as possible, let your clients know about the situation. You don’t have to go into details, but you ought to alert them to what’s going on, particularly if you’re not able to work as usual. You’ll find most to be understanding and that helps to give you some peace-of-mind. Surround yourself with positive people. This is something that successful entrepreneurs naturally do but it’s very important when you’re going through tough times. Personally, I lean on others as well as my faith and prayer to shoulder the burdens of crisis. It’s uplifting and it can be a way to see the silver lining knowing others are walking with you. Give team members more flexibility. Your employees are huge assets to your business and during a personal crisis, can be the best go-to source for carrying-out day-to-day operations. Give them the flexibility that’s needed to keep your company running smoothly. Do not put undue pressure on yourself. If there’s one thing entrepreneurs struggle with, it’s the fear of not getting the job done. When you are dealing with personal issues, give yourself permission to lighten your workload. Take time to reflect on what’s most important. This is an ideal time to put everything in perspective. Give yourself time off and reflect on what’s truly important in your life. In addition to these, you should be honest with yourself about your life’s direction. Some business owners who experience a personal crisis use it as a learning tool advantageously, but others allow the event to cloud their judgment and make rash decisions. When you’re not thinking clearly, be willing and ready to ask for advice from someone you trust. In my life, I have found great opportunity comes from crisis because of my willingness to reflect and make changes. Whether You Think You Can Or You Think You Can’t, You’re…Wrong?

Henry Ford once famously said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” But, if you just replace the last word with its antonym, does it really change the statement’s meaning? It’s not much different than the glass half-empty, glass half-full analogy. The point is that in every situation, no matter how challenging, opportunity does present itself. It’s whether you choose to act on it or not. So, let’s take a few moments to break this down and gain some insight that can be very valuable in tough circumstances. Best Tips For Maintaining A Positive Outlook When Things Go Wrong We’ve all heard the comparison: entrepreneurship is a “rollercoaster ride” of highs and lows, triumphs and setbacks. While the allure of success drives many to embark on this journey, the reality often includes unexpected hurdles and long moments of doubt. When carefully laid plans go awry and obstacles seem insurmountable, maintaining a positive outlook can be a Herculean task. Yet, optimism is the lifeblood of entrepreneurship, fueling perseverance and innovation in the face of adversity. Staying Optimistic as an Entrepreneur Let’s stay with the rollercoaster analogy—some days you’re soaring high, and other days, you feel like you’re plunging down. It’s easy to get lost in the negativity that comes with challenges. But how can you keep that sparkle of optimism alive, even when the going gets tough? Below, we’ll explore some strategies to help you maintain a bright outlook, starting with perspective. Embrace the Learning Curve Every setback can feel like a punch to the gut, but what if we saw them as opportunities for growth? When things don’t go as planned, instead of sulking, ask yourself: “What can I learn from this?” Entrepreneurs are all about problem-solving. Shift your focus from the problem to the lesson. Treat it like opening up a roadblock on a thoroughfare. The more you learn, the stronger you become. Surround Yourself with Positivity Ever heard the saying, “You are who you hang out with”? It rings true for entrepreneurs, too. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not those who bring you down. Friends, mentors, or even fellow business owners can spark a fresh wave of optimism. When you share your struggles with like-minded folks, it provides you with a cheering squad. Positive vibes are contagious—let them fuel your spirit. Set Small, Achievable Goals Large goals look a lot like mountains on the horizon. They can be overwhelming, especially when obstacles appear. Why not break that mountain down into smaller, manageable hills? This way, every small step you take feels like a victory. Celebrate those wins, no matter how tiny they seem. Each small success can boost your confidence and help you stay optimistic about reaching your ultimate goal. Cultivate Gratitude Daily It’s easy to dwell on what’s going wrong, but spotting the good in your day can flip the script. Take a moment to jot down three things you’re grateful for every day. It could be a helpful customer, a supportive friend, or just a sunny day. This simple act can shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. When you focus on gratitude, optimism naturally follows. Visualize Your Success Picture this: you’re standing on a stage, your business thriving, customers loving your product. How does that feel? Visualization is a powerful tool. Spend a few minutes each day imagining your success. This practice ignites motivation and fuels optimism. When you can see the finish line, it’s easier to stay positive when hurdles appear along the way. Find Inspiration Everywhere Life often has its fair share of ups and downs. Seek stories of other entrepreneurs who have faced adversity and come out shining. These tales can act as fuel for your fire. When you hear how someone turned their setbacks into comebacks, it’s the same as a light bulb flicking on in your brain. It reminds you that challenges don’t define you—they’re merely stepping stones on your path to success. Practice Self-Care Regularly Amid the hustle and bustle of entrepreneurship, it’s easy to overlook your well-being. Neglecting self-care can drain your energy and optimism. Make time for activities that recharge your spirit—be it exercise, meditation, or reading a good book. Taking care of your body and mind equips you to handle challenges with a clearer perspective. I Found Out an Employee has been Doing Something Unethical but Not Illegal – Now What?

First, this has to stop right away. And second, it has to stop because you definitely don’t want this type of practice to be representative of your business – even if it is somehow benefiting your customers. (For example, cheating a manufacturer’s rebate.) Even if it’s small, the very fact that your employee has to do something that isn’t ethical makes it wrong. You already know this, which is precisely why it bothers you in the first place. Regardless, it can be very tempting to let certain instances slide. But, you must think about the possible consequences and repercussions should this go bad. So, let’s get into a few suggestions for what to do when you discover an employee is doing something unethical but no illegal. Ethics and the Law There’s no question that just because an act isn’t ethical doesn’t mean it’s necessarily illegal. After all, the law doesn’t deal strictly with morality. (Although a lot of laws are indeed based on standards of decent behavior.) Notwithstanding, you instinctively know when a practice isn’t ethical and just because there isn’t a direct on-point law, that doesn’t mean it’s all right. The experts in leadership and management at Michigan State University emphasize that it’s important to consider who is involved with the situation when dealing with unethical behavior in the workplace. Is it just one person involved or are there several people connected to act? —Houston Chronicle Business Management However, there could be illegality. What might seem to be mostly harmless could be against the law. Obviously, this is exactly what you should know. Take the time to research the subject and find out if there are legal issues – be they criminal, civil, or possibly, both. How to Deal with Unethical Employee Behavior If you learn that what’s going on isn’t illegal but is still unethical, you have some options. Unfortunately, none of them are particularly pleasant. But, your business’ integrity could well be at stake. Here are a few ways to deal with unethical employee behavior: Arm yourself with facts. Before you act on the issue, be sure to have all the facts at your disposal. If necessary, write them down to become familiar. You’ll undoubtedly have to confront this employee and he or she will probably have at least a few justifications and/or excuses. So, be ready to counter and push back with the facts. Talk with your employee. Speak with your employee and your HR leader. If your company doesn’t have such a department, just speak with him or her one-on-one. Be polite but firm. And, listen to what he or she has to say. They’re likely justifying their actions and it might be something that’s easily fixed. Establish a new company policy. You may have to establish an entirely new company policy. Or, make adjustments to an existing one. Regardless, be sure that every single employee knows so this doesn’t continue. What other suggestions do you have for dealing with this type of situation? Please share your thoughts and experiences so that others can benefit from your input!
